'Fresh Off the Boat' Cast Calls Out HFPA for 1996 Ang Lee Snub Fresh Off the Boat Login to vote

Is Ang Lee still sour with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for his 1996 Golden Globes loss to Mel Gibson for best director?

Likely not. The Sense and Sensibility helmer has since won twice, for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in 2001 and again in 2006 with Brokeback Mountain, but the fictional family of ABC's Fresh Off the Boat is happy to still carry the grudge.

Playing up their mid-1990s milieu, the Randall Park, Constance Wu and the rest of the cast have released a for-your-consideration spot of sorts — showing the family, all sporting t-shirts with Lee's likeness, losing their collective cool when their fellow Taiwanese-born American comes up short against Gibson's Braveheart.

"The Huang family has not watched the Golden Globes since 1996," it reads, as heartfelt PSA-friendly piano chords play in the background. "Give them a reason to come back by honoring them with a nomination."

There are, of course, plenty of other '90s-friendly references — Silence of the Lambs and the OJ Simpsons trial among them — but Wu's assessment of the unlikely creative force behind Sense and Sensibility may top them all.

The Golden Globe are fast approaching, by the way. Deadline for ballots is Dec. 7, with the nominations announcement following on Dec. 10.
