x264 is much appreciated, but it would be preferable if it was in a mp4 container rather than a mkv
container. vlc just chokes on mkv files. massive cpu usage. mp4 is much less cpu-intensive for some
reason.

it's noting with mkv container. x264 results in massive cpu usage. if you want
to play it well, use coreavc and select "skip all debloking" and "no
deinterlacing".

if you weren't so stupid you'd know that the 1gb version is 720p
version....which is better quality...

hmmm... where to start.

1) you will never see the scene release it in mp4 for one simple reason.
the audio is ac3. mp4 though very good it does not support ac3. since
the feed is ac3 no one is going to covert it to aac which takes more time
and degrades the quality and of course the capper has to do more steps
so a huge pain in the butt.

2) the massive cpu comes from it being 720p rez which is huge and that x264
takes a lot more cpu than say xvid but you get much better quality at the
same file sizes vs xvid. (or you could go with much smaller files sizes and
get the same quality but 720p is about quality first and foremost)

3) mkv plays fine in vlc for me. (get the latest version 8.6 or higher)
but as others have suggested. get coreavc 1.3 it is very fast and use
classic player) on the mac side vlc works great for me also. there is
no difference in cpu usage since mkv and mp4 are the containers and the real
cpu usage is the decoding of x264 of such high rez content. so it appears
you have something wrong on your box. either older vlc (or bad vlc prefs etc..)
or your box is just too slow to really handle 720p x264 content.

good luck

are you kidding? the 720p rez is 1280 x 720.

the 350 meg rez is only 624 x 352 and low quality
because xvid can't compress as well so you get more blocks and blurriness.
(now x264 could do that rez awesomely at just 350 megs but that is not gonna happen)

1280 x 720 is 4.1 times more pixels/detail. with x264 you can do it
with just 3 times the files size and still have plenty left over to make it
even better. if xvid was used then you would need about a 2 gig output file
to get the same quality. that is why x264 was chosen.

also the 720p has full 6 channel surround sound from the original ac3.
the 350 meg version the ac3 was converted to mp3 so
you only get stereo and you get a quality loss in audio as well.

anyway,

once you watch 720p you will never want to watch the low rez crap again.

and now only if we could just burn a mkv file directing to a dvd with no
transcoding and/or converting and pop it in a stand alone dvd player. that would
be sweet.

dont u think i know its better quality with the 1gb ver. but what is the point.
the 350mb ver is good enought to watch. or r u burning it on dvds or something.
if u like the show buy the dvd. im just downloading it because here in finland
they r at season 5.

i don't watch 24, but i watch the 720p versions of lost, and i hate it when i
have to get the 350mb versions nowadays cos i'm going away.
the 720p versions really are worth it if you have a big screen (i'm on a 20"
monitor, but its so clear even on this.) hooking a big screen up to your
computer and watching it in hd with surround sounds is way better than watching
it on a piddley little 15" with desktop speakers.
anyway, a gb isn't that much nowadays, you can get a 500gb hdd for under

fuck you newb. you don't have hdtv obviously, and if you love your 16:9
resolution at like 320p resolution, then go ahead.

i like my 720p fox hd shows and 1080i nbc/cbs shows.

just because you're poor and you have shitty internet and a crappy hard drive
that can't fit everything and no hdtv doesn't mean you complain. go diaf newb.

what do you mean what's the point? why don't you watch your damn tv shows off
fox's website then if low quality rocks. go watch it on youtube. it must be
t3h r0x0rz. i'll live with my ts recordings of 24 that run up to 5gb, while
you can watch your crappy versions. have fun.

get a better computer. deal with it. if you can't live iwth technology today,
don't complain. you're obviously the one lagging behind.

or you just have your codecs installed wrong.

duh......buy what dvd??
this is season 6 and there are no dvd's for sale (except for the first 4hrs).

yeah....i burn them to dvd, run them through a pj to a 92" screen and enjoy
watching the incredibly clear resolution that 720p provides.

not to mention the dd5.1 sound that my ht system uses to rock the house!!!!

thanks for upping this version btw!
